Buyer's guide

How to choose a crypto exchange in 2026

The best exchange depends on what you're doing, buying your first Bitcoin, trading derivatives, or hunting altcoins. But five fundamentals apply to everyone. Weigh them in order before you deposit.

1. Security and regulation come first

Nothing else matters if the platform loses your funds. Before anything, check for:

  • Proof-of-reserves audits, independent verification the exchange holds customer assets 1:1.
  • Cold storage above 90%, most funds kept offline, away from hackers.
  • A valid license in your jurisdiction, e.g. NYDFS/FinCEN in the US, FCA in the UK, MiCA in the EU.
  • A documented incident history, transparency about past incidents is a good sign, not a bad one.

Kraken and Coinbase set the standard here, which is why they top our ranking despite not having the lowest fees.

2. Understand the true cost of trading

Headline maker/taker fees are only part of the story. Three hidden costs catch most beginners: spread (zero-fee platforms widen it), simple-buy markups (the one-click flow can cost 5–10× the pro order book), and deposit/withdrawal fees. Read our complete guide to trading fees to see the all-in cost.

3. Match the platform to your experience level

  • Beginners, favour clarity and support: Coinbase or Crypto.com.
  • Active & derivatives traders, favour liquidity and low fees: Binance, Bybit, OKX.
  • Altcoin hunters, favour breadth of listings: Gate.io, KuCoin, MEXC.

4. Check availability and rules in your country

The factor most guides ignore. Binance, Bybit and OKX restrict or block US residents, so US traders should generally stick to Coinbase or Kraken. Wherever you are, confirm the exchange is legally available and that fiat deposits work with your local bank before signing up.

5. Never use an exchange as a long-term wallet

Even the safest exchange is a custodian, you don't hold the private keys. Keep only what you actively trade on the exchange, and move the rest to a hardware wallet. Our crypto security guide covers 2FA, seed phrases and cold storage.
